Witney Guitar Club 'Twelve Days Of Fretmas' #8 - Meet Joe

We asked the 12 Guitarists from the Performance Group of Witney Guitar Club some questions. Here's their response

Day #8 of 'The 12 Days of Fretmas'.

Meet Witney Guitar Club Member - Joe - who has been with the Club since it began, in 2024.

What Instruments Do You Play?

Guitar and can play one song with a harmonica

What’s the best concert you’ve ever attended?

AC/DC - close second the The Eagles, but their sound was huge, guitar work was perfect, and to hear 110,000 people singing the words to all their best songs left me overwhelmingly impressed!

Which is the best gig you've ever played?

I once did a private solo gig for a Chapter of the Hells Angels, in Durban, South Africa. I was apprehensive at first, but they were such a genuine welcoming group of guys and gals, and showed real appreciation for my acoustic stylings of pop songs. Good friendships were made, and during the night, t-shirts were removed…not only by the guys…😉

Which is the worse gig you've ever played?

The Cricketers Pub in Oxford. Totally lifeless crowd…and I was advised by a customer that I should meet him the following week when he would coach me on how to interact with a crowd…W⚓️🤣🤣

Which has been your best Witney Guitar Club gig so far?

With the Witney Guitar Club, I loved the Bradwell Village Summer Party gig. It was relaxed, interactive with the picnic goers, and the harmonies, drum beat, baselines, tabs and vocals were all on point.

Which artist/band/genre(s) do you like to listen to?

The Eagles, John Mellencamp, Everley Brothers. Any music with good guitar work and vocal harmonies.

What music styles do you like to play?

Acoustic rhythm and finger picking.

What is your favourite Witney Guitar Club song that we play?

My favourite song to play is "Bonfire Heart" (James Blunt); but a song which really touched me is "No Hard Feelings" (The Avett Brothers)… this I want played at my funeral. Beautiful song. Would never have heard it, if not for Brian’s music choices for the club.

What do you like most about The Witney Guitar Club?

The people I have met and friendships made. The music and vocal harmonies aren’t bad either…😉

What tips would you tell your younger self, just starting out to play?

Do it exactly like I did it…self taught and play for the love of playing. And start getting acrylic nails on your right hand sooner.

Tell us something about yourself that people may not know

In 2018, in honour of my dad who passed away in 2017, I finished a full distance Ironman Triathlon to celebrate his life and input into mine. A 3.8km swim, 180km cycle and full 42.2km marathon - in 16hrs. My son last year tattooed the IM logo around my ankle, when he finished his tattooing course.

How will you be spending Christmas?

We’re heading on our first family holiday in 7 years, to Turkey!
