Witney Guitar Club 'Twelve Days Of Fretmas' #4 - Meet Andy C

We asked the 12 Guitarists from the Performance Group of Witney Guitar Club some questions. Here's their response ...

Day #4 of 'The 12 Days of Fretmas'.

Meet Witney Guitar Club Member - Andy C - who has been with the Guitar Club since March 2025.

What Instruments Do You Play?

Mainly guitars (electric and acoustic, 6 and 12 string)

What’s the best concert you’ve ever attended?

The Byrds, Fairfield Halls, Croydon, back in the 70s. Fantastic band. Quite a lot of other memorable gigs too!

Which is the best gig you've ever played?

O2 Academy, Shoreditch, The ADLs - playing in a great venue and raising money for charity.

Which is the worse gig you've ever played?

A pub in East Grinstead, Sussex, early 70s. Played probably the world's worst ever solo as I stumbled - without any success - to find the key the song was in (Spanish Eyes - odd chords). Members of the band (my brother-in-law's band, as their regular guitarist was on holiday) were actually crying with laughter, made even funnier by the fact that most in the audience didn't seem to notice...

Which has been your best Witney Guitar Club gig so far?

So little experience but have enjoyed every one.

Which artist/band/genre(s) do you like to listen to?

Mainly 70s prog rock (favourite band Van der Graaf Generator) and electro-folk plus a range of other songs I simply like.

What music styles do you like to play?

Various

What is your favourite Witney Guitar Club song that we play?

The Tom Petty one! (I Won't Back Down)

What do you like most about The Witney Guitar Club?

The camaraderie; the lack of stress; the sound; the fact all of us - regardless of what we perceive our ability is - contribute; good for our mental health and the opportunity to gig and do good things.

What tips would you tell your younger self, just starting out to play?

Play along to records more (that way you can say 'I used to play with the Rolling Stones...'); practice more; focus on melody not speed; learn to keep time; learn to read music and Tab and understand music theory.

Tell us something about yourself that people may not know

I'm a bit of a petrolhead and competed 24 times at the annual Brighton National Speed Trials and have attended the annual 24 hours Le Mans sports car race 42 times. Have a few guitars - one of which is a Stratocaster kit mounted in a glass case but still in component form (glued and screwed to the backing). It has a label on the glass that says: 'In case of disco break glass'.

How will you be spending Christmas?

Quietly at home on Christmas Day; at youngest daughter's with rest of family on Boxing Day.
