Witney Guitar Club 'Meet the players'- Meet Richard
We asked the Guitarists from the Tuesday Group of Witney Guitar Club some questions about themselves. Here's their response
‘Meet The Players'
Meet Witney Guitar Club Member - Richard - who joined us in September 2026.
What Instruments Do You Play?
Guitar and Bodhran
What’s the best concert you’ve ever attended?
Transatlantic Sessions. Feb 2026 at the New Theatre. Best because it was a dozen musicians and singers at the top of their game, playing the music I love.
Have you ever played a live gig?
In my village, National Music Day lived on for a few years. I formed a "covers" band called "In Transit", and we played for our neighbours, family and friends.
Have you ever played a bad gig?
Playing at a church meeting, I was leading the "worship", the chords were OK, but I couldn't remember the melody.
Which artist/band/genre(s) do you like to listen to?
Any traditional folk music. Also Dylan, Stones, CCR, Tavelling Wilburys and any music ftom the sixties.
What music styles do you like to play?
Folk and music from the sixties.
What is your favourite Witney Guitar Club song that we play?
It's early days, but so far "The Erie Canal Song" and "My father’s Christmas Table".
What do you like most about The Witney Guitar Club?
I have usually been the only rhythm guitar in a group, and chosen my own rhythm and frilly bits. Playing in WGC is teaching me the discipline of how to play and keep time with others.
What tips would you tell your younger self, just starting out to play?
What tips would you tell your younger self, just starting out to play?
Play with others whenever you can.
Tell us something about yourself that people may not know
I was an active morris dancer for 15 years, and danced at the Royal Albert Hall several times with the Abingdon Traditional Morris Dancers. I am still a member, but no longer dance.
