Witney Guitar Club 'January Jam’ #11 - Meet Peter
We asked the Guitarists from the Tuesday Group of Witney Guitar Club some questions about themselves. Here's their response
‘January Jam’ #11
Meet Witney Guitar Club Member - Peter - who is one of our newest members, joining in January 2026.
What Instruments Do You Play?
Acoustic and electric guitars, and ukulele.
What’s the best concert you’ve ever attended?
From ancient history it has to be Genesis The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway at Birmingham Hippodrome in 1975. More recently, The Eagles and Doobie Brothers at Manchester CoOp in 2024.
Have you ever played a live gig?
Dozens of gigs with the Buttercross Ukulele Band. Only a few guitar gigs really, but includes playing my own blues composition live on BBC Radio Oxford in 2019. After my retirement I joined the Muzoakademy Rock Barn in Witney to learn how to play the guitar, and they encouraged us to write and play our own songs live.
Have you ever played a bad gig?
Last summer the ukulele band played at an event at The Leys in Witney, but there was no PA for our ukes to plug into, just vocal mics….they said we were the best acapella band they’d ever had!
Which artist/band/genre(s) do you like to listen to?
A huge range really, but if I have to name some favourites that list would include The Beatles, Genesis (Gabriel era), The Eagles, Steely Dan, 10CC and anything that’s Bluesy.
What music styles do you like to play?
Really don’t mind, my music folder is full of all sorts of stuff.
What is your favourite Witney Guitar Club song that we play?
I’ve only just joined, and I’m enjoying them all so far. I really like how we’re playing 'When I’m Gone' by Joey & Rory Feek.
What do you like most about The Witney Guitar Club?
The opportunity to play with such a friendly group of guys, and try entirely new songs I’ve never heard of before!
What tips would you tell your younger self, just starting out to play?
What tips would you tell your younger self, just starting out to play?
Don’t wait like I did until you’re 60 to start learning how to play the guitar.
Tell us something about yourself that people may not know
I was privileged to meet “the 5th Beatle” Sir George Martin in 2009, when he opened up his home in Coleshill near Faringdon to the public, as part of the National Gardens Scheme. We chatted together about The Beatles for about 20 minutes, and he was an absolute gentleman.
Any plans for 2026?
Just enjoy getting to know people at Witney Guitar Club better.
Want to join us?
Make a New Year's resolution to start playing your guitar again and start 2026 with some FUN!
